Simple systems are easier to build, and that frees attention for the design — for getting the architecture, abstractions and interfaces right. Get those right and the system is easier to understand, review and test, and therefore more reliable.

Simplicity leads to elegance — in how the software is constructed, in how it is used, in how it meets other systems. But simple doesn’t mean simplistic: simple components, verified in isolation, are what larger systems get built from.

Automation replaces repetitive processes and captures expertise. Once a process is automated it can be optimised, which makes it faster and more reliable at the same time.

Captured expertise can then be leveraged across an organisation, making it more consistent and more resilient to change. We automate at two levels — the production of software, and the business processes that software serves.

Open Software is about flexibility — software engineered to grow as requirements change, rather than “closed” solutions that lock an organisation in to one technology or product set.

That means open architectures, tools chosen for the task, well-defined protocols and simple abstracted interfaces — recognised standards, with innovation within them. We use open source to implement it, but it involves more than that.

Digital Smarties develops with AI coding agents — working against the real codebase, under direction. It is the automation argument applied to our own craft: repetitive work is handed off, and expertise is captured where it can be applied again.

It shortens the work that used to be deferred — understanding an unfamiliar codebase, getting a prototype in front of you early enough for your feedback to change it, keeping tests and documentation in scope when the schedule tightens.

What it does not change is deciding what to build — still the work, and still done by talking to the people who will use the software. Everything is reviewed before it ships and held to the same standard as work written by hand. The speed is spent on your problem, not on demonstrating the tool.
